About Me
Hello and welcome! I am Dr. Michael Lomuscio, an educational leader whose passion lies in enhancing academic communities by honoring tradition while embracing innovation. I hold an Ed.D in Educational and Organizational Leadership from the University of Pennsylvania, where I developed a profound appreciation for the delicate balance between preserving culture and pursuing progress.
In my role as Dean of Studies at ‘Iolani School, I have the privilege of overseeing our academic program and supporting offices, nurturing a culture of academic curiosity and excellence. My work is a tapestry of curriculum development, information technology, health and wellness, sustainability, and more all woven with the threads of ‘Iolani's rich heritage. I believe in fostering a learning environment that is reflective, inclusive, and forward-thinking, ensuring that while we embrace new methodologies and technologies, we also respect and integrate the enduring values and practices that have defined our history.
My tenure at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School as Director of STEAM Programs was characterized by thoughtful growth and the harmonious integration of a STEAM Center that became a beacon for interdisciplinary learning. It stands as a testament to my approach: cultivating advancement in education by creating spaces that resonate with both current educational demands and time-honored educational philosophies.
Working in boarding schools has afforded me a nuanced understanding of their distinct culture and the all-encompassing roles required of faculty and administrators. From teaching to participating in after-school programs and evening dorm supervision, I have a firsthand appreciation of the commitment it takes to fulfill the diverse needs of a boarding community. This comprehensive involvement has equipped me with deep insights into creating supportive, engaging, and educational experiences that resonate well beyond the classroom.
My commitment to education extends beyond school leadership, as I engage with the broader educational landscape through podcasting, serving on boards, and participating in conferences. In every aspect of my professional journey, I advocate for diversity and inclusivity, actively participating in initiatives that enrich our understanding and practice of these principles.
I bring a rich background in research to my educational practice, with contributions to applied mathematics, environmental studies, and educational development. My collaborative research with the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider delved into the intricacies of particle physics, while my environmental work included mathematical modeling for the EPA and studying invasive species spread in North Carolina. In the realm of education, my analysis of STEM programs in independent schools has informed the design and implementation of curricula.
My vision is to guide and inspire our next generation of learners, thinkers, and leaders by providing them with the tools and wisdom to navigate the challenges of our world. However, this cannot be accomplished by simply witnessing the evolution of education. We need to actively shape it through collaborative effort and shared wisdom.
I am passionate about forging connections and exchanging insights to enrich our educational practices.
